Birthday Skirt and Saturday Fun

We had a really fun day today! Joel's mom and grandmother came up, and Jayne (his mother) and I had a really good talk this afternoon while the girls slept and Joel was out with his grandmother. Then after the girls got up, they played with her and then played outside. Many bubbles were blown and one bubble wand made its way several times into Pilly's mouth. The girls also played in the car. I know they need to share, but sometimes I do wish we had two!



Here they were doing a very good job sharing:)



Then they switched places and Pilly was almost pushed out the door, but peace still reigned in the backyard!

Tomorrow, we are going to a birthday party for Pnut's friend Maddie. We bought her the Cooties game and I made her a twirly skirt:



I love this pattern because I can do it all in one afternoon and it turns out so cute! I wasn't too sure about the colors when I bought the fabric, but I just love the way it turned out.



Here is a close-up of the detail. The flowers kind of remind me of the ones that are in my garden!

Then because I had some leftover material and wanted to make sure we had enough (Maddie's parents are very generous with Pnut's birthday), I decided to make a purse:



I love this little purse!!! I was going to try to find some ribbon like the tutorial suggested for that edging, but I am so glad that I decided to go with the lining fabric. I think it is just too cute. Now, hopefully Maddie will like it. I don't know...her mom said we could get her a truck for her birthday so we will see!

In other news, silly Java slept with us last night. He chewed on my hair and pushed me around and woke me up in the middle of the night. I would like to say that he did the same to Joel, but he didn't bother him at all. That silly dog wouldn't leave me alone. I am not sure that he will be returning to the bed tonight. I feel bad putting him in the basement again though but I do need more sleep than that!

Our Surprise

My mom brought a surprise for the girls tonight. It all came about rather quickly. As in we found out and decided about him yesterday.



This was Pnut when she first met him.



This was Pnut when she found out he was hers to keep.



She likes him, but she doesn't want him to lick her face.



Pilly, on the other hand, is already in love with him. He is allowed to lick her.



The girls were really trying to get him to play with his toys.



But he is still in the get-to-know-you stage that involves many kisses.



His name is Java, and he is a doxen/yorkie mix...also known as a dorkie. Go ahead and laugh. I did. I chuckled several times throughout the day thinking about that.



He smells like a dog, but I think we like him anyways. I think that I don't have a lot of say at this point.



Here is what he is doing right now. I was thinking that he wasn't going to be allowed on the couch. I am probably going to be overruled there as well. Which one of them do you think likes this more??

I've never had a dog before so I think it is going to be a bit of an adjustment. Ugh. Potty training and all that. He is a cutie though. I guess having that little stinker is worth the excitement of those girls. Here's hoping they don't kill him with love!

Keep the Rainbow Vacuum Man Away!

Oh my. Oh my, oh my. If the Rainbow vacuum cleaner people ever ask to come to your house, just say no. Unless you want a cleaner house. Then say yes. That stupid vacuum just sells itself. Honestly, if he hadn't said a word, just demonstrated, we probably would have bought one anyways. They last for 35-40 years. They don't spit the dust back out. We don't have to buy anything. No filters. It won't need replaced every three or four years. So now I am going to go contemplate how much money we spent in one night. It is amazing that I can feel so elated and so shocked all at once. I am happy that we are going to have something that cleans so well, but oh heavens, it was rather expensive.

*Sigh*

Weird

I have to balance the checkbook tonight. Boo. Therefore, there will be no sewing.

Would you like to hear something weird? Joel's grandmother has made me super paranoid about going to the bathroom. I have to check the toilet for snakes every time now. Apparently it was on the news one time about a snake being in someone's toilet and she is super nervous about this happening to her. And then I saw it on about a different time. So now I have to check. Even if it means flipping on the light in the middle of the night. No snakes!

Tomorrow we are trying out the playground! Hope it goes well...have a great night!

What a Busy Time!

I finally completed a piece of clothing for myself! There is a tutorial on Sew Mama Sew for this shirt. It was somewhat challenging...probably not for a more experienced seamstress, but I have never made a shirt before. I loved the green color! If I were to make it again, I probably wouldn't put the ruffle on the sleeves. They are a little annoying. I might also put a contrast band around the bottom. This was also the first time I have ever done pleats. They weren't difficult, just a little time consuming.

If I am ever able to take a picture with my eyes completely open, I will post it. But until that time, all you are going to get is pictures of things on hangers!

We have had such a busy four days! Thursday night, we had a picnic with our friends the Hershey's. Then there was softball followed by ice cream at Brad and Jackie's, which also included bubbles. The girls loved it! I think Pilly was just going to stay out on the porch all night. She was out there all by herself and didn't care!!

Pnut went to work with Daddy on Friday and had a ball. She is still talking about it. She helped him by pushing boxes around in the truck and riding on the carts. Meanwhile, thank goodness it was cleaning day here! It is so quiet without her! I put poor little slave Pilly to work:



She actually did well playing most of the time by herself while I cleaned. I think she enjoyed not having anyone take toys from her. I enjoyed that too.

Saturday we went to some yard sales and got some good deals. I got my hair cut in the evening and we used the last of our monthly eating out budget for Chili's. I had bacon, chicken, and ranch tacos with their new salsa ranch sauce. Oh heavens...it was wonderful! The sauce is also good on french fries and mashed potatoes. Probably anything you stick in there would taste good. Sunday we had church and Target and we watched Curious George The Movie. Every Sunday we watch a movie together, which has been fun. Today, we went to my grandparents' house for a picnic with family. I beat four men at croquet. It was a good day:)

Pnut has been taking her medicine since last Wednesday and everything has cleared up. I was going to try taking her back to the playground tomorrow to see if she had a reaction, but it is supposed to rain so we will see. We weren't sure if there was something there that could be causing it, but we have been going there for quite a while so don't see how it could be. However, I am going to try her off the medicine on Wednesday so I would like to know before I take her off. I could wait until Thursday to take her off if I need to. If she is not completely better in three weeks, we will have to take her back. Yuck!

Now it is time for me to go relax. I have a good book and some tea to drink. I just want you all to know how much I love my children: I broke all of the pieces of the Cooties game out so that it is ready to play tomorrow. If you have ever done this, you understand!

Yet another eventful day!

This will again be a post with no pictures. I know they are not as fun, but today was a bit of a crazy day. Surprise, right?!

Yesterday after her nap, Pnut woke with a rash. It was kind of a strange rash. It started out on her torso, almost like a shirt, and then moved down to her legs. I called the doctor and they said that it was probably hives and to give her Benadryl. I also asked my visiting nurse Carolyn to come over and check her out. She agreed with the diagnosis so Benadryl was purchased. (Carolyn is really my friend who happens to be a nurse and accomodates my demands) Anyways, besides a midnight low-grade fever and one-hour arousal, everything was back to normal this morning. Then again after nap, she had a rash, but her face was swollen around her glands, she could only open her left eye halfway, and her right ear was very swollen. I called the doctor for an appointment, took pictures so they would know what she looked like, and gave her more Benadryl. We went, and they put her on Claritin and Zantac for three weeks. I am going to try to take her off after one and two weeks to see if the symptoms come back. If they are not totally cleared up after three weeks, she has to go to an allergist. The doctor said it could be a viral infection that she is reacting too or it could be something else. I am praying that it is the infection. She hates the medicine (it does taste horrible-no sugar in it) and I cannot imagine her having to take it forever.

This is only the third time in her entire life that she has been to the doctor for a sick visit. The others were at 3 and 6 months. I hate taking them to the doctor and I hate having them on medicine, but I want her to be able to breahe. That is the next step I think...that her throat would probably start to swell. I most certainly do not want that!

I did sew tonight, but I didn't finish my shirt. I guess I won't be wearing it tomorrow!

Oh Dear

I was slightly suspicious that the pants I made for Pnut were going to be too big. Well, I knew they were going to be big. I just didn't realize how very big. Big enough that we would have to roll the legs several times to see her feet and probably couldn't roll the top enough to make them stay up. The pattern was x-small for size 3/4. Ha! Maybe if your 3yo is a monster. I think I will give them to my nephew because he is a monster:) He wears at least 2 sizes ahead of his age. He is going to be five feet tall by the time he turns 5.

So this afternoon I decided to make a pair for Pilly. Our dear little friend Baby Kake will be receiving these pants at the softball game Thursday night. They were a little short and weren't big enough to go the whole way up over Pilly's diaper. I tried to just trace around a pair of her pants and enlarge it some. Wrong. That is the wrong way to approach that. I took her measurements and will be coming up with a real pattern.

Thank goodness there was like 3.5 yards of this stuff. There is still enough to make pants for both of them. I am out of yellow thread now. After all these sewing mishaps, I am not sure if I am going to do anything tonight. Joel brought me a book from the library so maybe I will do that tonight. And eat bagel chips. Homemade bagel chips are the bomb! Have an awesome night!

Pnut's George Pants

I only have 15 minutes until I want to go to bed and I want to have a snack so I am going to have to type my full 80 wpm to get this done! I made these George pants for Pnut tonight:



She has been waiting for these for quite a while! I did not go up and measure the legs against her sleeping form after removing the blankets from her to see how long they should be. They are still going to be long, but I wanted to give her room to grow in them because I have a feeling she is going to want to wear them every night. I am not sure if she is going to get a pillowcase yet. I want to make Pilly a pair too. There should be enough leftover material for a pillowcase, but we will have to see.



Even though he is very naughty, I do think George is cute:)

Pnut slept for 3 hours this afternoon so Pilly and I had some time together. We were looking at a big book of animals, and she said turkey! It is shameful how much less I have taught her, but I guess that is the price of being the second. Pnut knew all the animals in the book very early! Pilly also said thank you for the first time today. When did she start talking so much?



She makes me laugh because she lays like this all of the time. I think she saw Pnut lay on the floor to read her books so she does it too. She loves her big sissy! She was so wiggly that it was hard to get a good picture. She is such a ham. When I picked the camera up, she started saying cheese over and over.

The weekend just flew by. They always do. I got caught up on my sleep so that was wonderful. I have been trying to go to bed on time and most of the time I feel pretty good, but towards the end of the week I definitely get tired of getting up at 6:00!!

Finales and Projects

Tonight is the last night for The Office and 30 Rock, and in some ways, I am glad. I am getting some sewing energy back and want to get started so I won't have TV in the way anymore. The only thing that I can think of that I am interested for the summer is that game with the big balls that are in the obstacle course. Now I can't think of the title! Oh well. Maybe I don't need to watch it then!

On tap are several projects: I need to do the last set of curtains, make Pnut her Curious George pants and pillowcase. I might make Pilly some pants too. I also want to make the girls each an outfit for summer. In my head, I have a pattern for a sun dress for the girls. However, I need to transfer it to paper and try it out on some muslin first. I've never done that before so it should be exciting. I also have to make a twirly skirt for Pnut's friend who is having a birthday party at the end of the month. Hmm, that really is a lot of things to work on. I am excited for next week!

Carolyn came this morning, and we played Candy Land: The Castle and a Fisher Price fishing game. We also Aquadoodled and Pnut got to play with some beads. Then as Lyn was getting ready to go, my mom came for lunch. She painted Pnut's nails, which she is still admiring, and our hour with her went really fast. Nap flew by, and then we played in the basement for an hour and then Joel was home. The evening went on wings and the girls went to bed early. Pnut keeps getting up at 6:00 and is just really tired. She hasn't been napping any longer so that is disappointing, but hopefully going to bed early will help some.

We have a picnic after church on Sunday, and we are just signed up for chips. However, I have a dessert that I want to try out. It is a strawberry shortcake cake that is on Pioneer Woman's site. It will all depend if we can go to the grocery store for the ingredients because I don't have them. It looks so yummy though!

Lost

In case you are amongst the few living under a rock, tonight is the season finale of Lost. It's two hours long so I will not be doing anything else tonight! Tomorrow is the finale of The Office and then my shows are done for the Spring. Hopefully, I will be able to get some more crafting in before I am sucked into a summer show!

Curtains

I decided to go ahead and put up the pictures of the curtains that I have done. I am afraid that if I wait until the ones for the computer room are done, it will be the end of summer!

Here are the living room curtains:



I love long curtains. I did not line them, but the material is relatively heavy. And honestly, it was extra money and I didn't want to pay! I love that material on the edge. I can't remember what it is called. Toile? Regardless, I have always liked that stuff and I was excited to be able to use it!

The kitchen curtains are my favorite! I am so pleased with the way they turned out. I shudder to think where I would have been without Carolyn. She picked out the material for these!



We used knobs that go on dressers and cabinets and found screws with no head. I was so excited because I thought we were not going to be able to use them because the screw was wrong.

I am really tired tonight. We had an exciting ball game, and it was just a long day. Have a wonderful night.

Mother's Day:) and So Much More

Happy Mother's Day one day late! We had a nice relaxing day, which is a wonderful change from the excitement we always seem to have around here. After church, we just got some Chinese to bring home because we knew the restaurants would all be crowded. At least, that is what Joel told me. Maybe he is just tired of Cracker Barrel since it is probably my favorite and I always choose that. I received a lovely pink tissue paper flower from Pnut that she made in Sunday School. She was very excited about it. Pilly wanted to get her hands and her slobber on it, but that was prevented, and it is now safely in a vase on our table. We all took naps, but Pnut got up after about an hour so I got up with her and then when Joel got up, I laid back down. He let the girls play in their room without supervision (I don't know where he was!), and this is what happened:



He said it was like an assembly line. Pilly would take the book off the shelf, hand it to Pnut, and Pnut would throw it on the pile. Apparently this was a "birthday cake" for Maddie, Pnut's friend. Use your imagination people!



Now about that excitement we didn't have yesterday. We had some today. While I was in the bath this morning, Pilly somehow fell into the corner of the wall so she has a lovely knot on her forehead. I think it is because I saw a little girl last week who had a humongous knot on her head and I didn't know how that could possibly happen. Pilly's isn't huge, but it is there! Then this afternoon on our second trip to the playground, Pnut ran up the slide and somehow forgot about the metal bar at the top and smashed her face off of it. There was much blood and she now sports a swollen lip. I am glad that no one looked closely at our children at the grocery store or they might have called Children and Youth!

I tried my salsa again tonight, and I only used 1/4 of the prescribed jalapenos. It is good, but I think it might need a little more jalapeno. I don't like really spicy, but this isn't quite kicking enough. At least my tongue is not swollen with huge bumps, right?! I have a little container for my dad and one for Jackie who is sampling it. Hopefully I willl remember to deliver both!

Tomorrow I am covering Dr. Chapman. Dr. Chapman is a lovely little doctor who believes that no dictation should be shorter than one hour and fifteen minutes but has been known to go up to two hours. Thankfully, he only has one dictation a day, but of course it takes me a little longer to type it than it does for him to speak it. We will have to see how it goes getting up early. Maybe I will have speedy fingers. Really, how can you stand to read all of this? Isn't it boring?!

Cleaning and Softball and Bragging, Oh My

What a day! Friday is always cleaning day here, so I got up and did my work for an hour and then made some French Toast for breakfast and then we got to work! I love having a clean house with everything nice and in order. The girls are really good about helping pick their things up, and they are hilarious with the vacuum cleaner! They run screaming and got around in circles and jump onto the furniture. What fun:)

I also need to brag about this child:

She folded those for me. She always does the washcloths. Today, she also tried socks. What a sweetie! She also made her bed for the second day in a row. She gets frustrated, but if I tell her what to do, she gets it. Maybe she can take over the dishes soon ;)



Is this not adorable? They were coloring together. Seeing the girls with Joel just makes my heart melt. *Sappy sigh*

Tonight we had our only softball game of the week. We were supposed to have two earlier, but they got rained out. Sadly, we did not win, but the guys really played great, especially since four of the regulars were not there! Pnut had a ball playing with some children whose dads were on the other team. We were so excited because she was talking and playing and having so much fun. She is so shy and doesn't usually just join in to things. Poor Pilly had to stay with me. She was pointing saying "my sissy" but wasn't allowed to go. She eats too many things off the ground and thinks she is bigger than she is so with me she must be!

I was going to sew tonight, but it is already 9:00! The game went later than usual so I think I will do some reading of some Real Simple magazine (thanks Jackie!). How very fun! And because she is cute, I leave you with this:

Early Riser

I have been getting up early to do my work in the morning before anyone else gets up. I usually get in an hour or hour and fifteen minutes before Pnut is up, and then after I eat my breakfast, I can usually fit in another 45 minutes while they doodle around with theirs and then watch Mickey Mouse. PTL for Mickey Mouse! I have been able to earn about $3/hr more doing it early in the morning. I think I am more alert and there are less distractions. Then, I can either take a nap in the afternoon or work more. I can sew, but I haven't done that yet. It is working out beautifully! The only thing is that I have to make sure I go to bed earlier. I've been trying for at least 10:30. No more 11:00 or 11:30 for me!

Shockingly enough, it is raining again. We were actually able to go outside this afternoon. We took a walk and then played in the back yard for about an hour. I sat in one of the chairs, but I ran inside to get something and came out to this:



"We took your chair Mommy." They were so cute. Pnut kept putting her arm around Pilly. They do love each other!

I also did Pnut's hair today:



I'll be honest, sometimes I don't even brush it. It is so silky and fine that she doesn't get many tangles. Isn't she a cutie?!

Well, I have 68 minutes until Lost starts so I guess I'll work on something. Or play Jewel Quest. Oh Jewel Quest, how I enjoy you!

Cheesy Meatball Skillet

This dish makes my taste buds do a happy dance! Unfortunately, Joel's mouth has the opposite reaction and the girls don't like it either so I guess I probably won't make it again unless I am trying to make it so that I eat all of supper by myself.

1 lb ground beef
10 saltine (1/2 cup) crackers, crushed (we used bread cubes soaked in milk instead)
1/4 c Italian dressing, divided
1 beef bouillon cube dissolved in 1/2 cup boiling water
1/2 c sour cream
1 c shredded Cheddar cheese

1. Mix meat, crackers, and 2 T of dressing until well blended. Shape into 32 1-inch balls.
2. Heat remaining dressing in nonstick skillet on med-high heat. Add meatballs, cook about 8 minutes until well browned, turning occasionally. Add bouillon, simmer 5 minutes or until meatballs are cooked through.
3. Stir sour cream in, cook 30 sec or until heated through but not simmering, stirring frequently. Remove from heat. Sprinkle with cheese, cover. Let stand 5 minutes or until cheese is melted.
4. Serve over pasta.

A note about the bread crumbs in milk: This is always how we make our meatloaf. However, for these meatballs, I don't know that I would do it again because until they got really browned, they were easy to make fall apart because they had so much liquid in them with the Italian dressing as well. Joel just likes the bread crumbs better than crackers.

The girls wouldn't even try it so I don't know if they really don't like it or (the more probable option) it is all in their silly little heads. Joel doesn't like the taste of the Italian dressing, he says it is too tangy. I am not sure what I did differently this time because he at least tolerated it before. And for those of you who know Joel and are wondering, I took his out of the pan before adding the sour cream and put their own cheese on.

For some reason, I was possessed with the desire to make my own pasta for tonight. I probably could have picked a better night to try that out. It took longer than I realized it would. Perhaps that whole thing about reading the whole way through instructions before beginning is valid. BUT the pasta was excellent. It was thicker and wider than we usually eat it, but it had a better taste. Some of you will understand when I say it was more like a pot pie noodle. Yum-O. I would like to try it again and see if I can make it thinner. It just puffs up so much when it is cooked so I don't know how thin I can possibly get it. The girls loved the pasta. They both ate a large portion. I don't think Pilly was going to stop but then Pnut got down and she had to be done too. Monkey See, Monkey Do!

In the same train of thought, today the girls came up with a new game. They took my little red step stool and put it in front of our landing like so:



The game was to jump from the stool to the landing. It really isn't that far. But Pilly can't jump so she has to first slowly climb onto the stool and stand up. Then she gets back down on her hands and knees and crawls over without touching the bottom step. All of this is done while Pnut impatiently tries to climb up on the stool with her. There were several times of tears, but they had fun and they were playing nicely together.

There is a chance that it might not rain tomorrow! I am thankful for the rain because I know we need rain to make things grow, but really, it has been raining for three days. I have had enough! It doesn't sound like that much, but with it taking out the option of going outside, it has us bouncing off the walls!

I think that I am going to take a nice little bath after I fold the clothes. I haven't started the computer room curtains yet. I know, I know. I'll get to them. I had a few days of frenzied sewing, and my sewing machine needs a rest. Have a wonderful night!

Goodness, I am not even sure. I would probably pick a perfectly-cooked steak with A1, Spanish rice, green beans covered in butter and garlic with blackberry tea and some kind of dessert. I can't pick which dessert...mostly I love them all.

I'm pretty sure it was Spiderman 3. I don't really care for the movie theater that much. It is too loud, you can't pause to go to the bathroom, and for some reason, my eyes always get really dry. That is probably more than you wanted to know!

What are you trying to do to my brain? I believe that the last thing that I bought to wear were a pair of tights from Target that finally went on sale for a good price. Then they got a run the first time I wore them. I did buy some material to make myself a shirt if that counts!

60 degrees with a few clouds but lots of sun. Enough to wear a light jacket and not get overheated running around.

Seriously I had a list of like 25 professions that I wanted to do. Probably one of the things that I wanted to do the most was be a jockey. And at 18 years of age, I developed an allergy to horses. Tragic.

I enjoy writing and was inspired by all of the sewing blogs that I stumbled across. I didn't even know what a blog was until about three weeks before I started mine!

Nonsanctioned haircuts by a 2-year-old, babies who climb onto tables, and sewing. Hopefully some humor thrown in as well.

I really enjoy Lollychops and Tollipop but if they are listed on the side of my page, I really like them. If I get bored with them, they come off of there!

#18 What is your dream job? (realistic or unrealistic)

I love staying at home with my girls! I guess if I could get paid to read and stay home, that would be wonderful!

I don't want to work at a job that tethers me anywhere but in my home. So I wouldn't change.

Um...forgive my ignorance...but I don't know any "real" designers. I enjoy Kathleen of Grosgrain. Her creativity is amazing. And disgusting.

#21 What's your favorite brand of jeans?

Well, it seems like when I like a pair of jeans, the company stops making them. I loved AE straight leg jeans. Then they were gone. I had this awesome pair of jeans from Rue 21 that I wore for like 3 years until they had lots of holes. My favorite now is Gap Long and Lean. But honestly, I don't like to wear jeans. And I also don't like paying for them. Yoga pants all the time! Isn't that terrible? I get mad when I have to put real pants on for something.
